The Star bertarikh 25 Jun 2010 – EDUCATING MALAYSIA THE RIGHT WAY
Ministry of Education (MOE) would like to thanks and refer to an article by P.Gunasegaran, Managing Editor of the Star for his comments and suggestion on the issue of –– “Educating M’sia the Right Way”, published in THE STAR newspaper dated 25th June 2010.
The ministry agrees with the editor that education methods and means is constantly changing and evolving. Thus improving the quality of education and ensuring its relevance is not an easy task.
Public feedback is most welcome in this matter as the Education Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has said that the ministry will not act in haste. Thus the ministry has not set any deadline for the review. Currently the ministry is actively seeking input from educationists, the public and student leaders.
The proposal to abolish the UPSR and RMR is part of the ministry’s effort to restructure the learning system which has been branded as being too exam-oriented and failing to provide a holistic education.
The Minister of Education is on record as suggesting the UPSR and PMR is rebranded as school-based assessment instead of public examinations. This is in line with the suggestions from the editor to reduce the emphasis on exams by introducing project-based activities.
The ministry would also like to assure interested parties that a decision concerning the proposal to abolish both UPSR and PMR will only be reached after careful consideration and taking into account input from all relevant parties.
